Non-local Effects in the Mean-field Disc Dynamo. Ii. Numerical and Asymptotic Solutions

چکیده
The thin-disc global asymptotics are discussed for axisymmetric meanfield dynamos with vacuum boundary conditions allowing for non-local terms arising from a finite radial component of the mean magnetic field at the disc surface. This leads to an integro-differential operator in the equation for the radial distribution of the mean magnetic field strength, Q(r) in the disc plane

The coexistence of odd and even parity magnetic fields in disc galaxies
Aims. Naive dynamo models predict that large-scale magnetic fields generated in flattened disc-like structures will be steady and symmetric with respect to the equatorial plane, whereas fields generated in quasi-spherical volumes will be oscillatory and anti-symmetric. Spiral galaxies consist of a flattened disc and a quasi-spherical halo. We thus investigate to what extent this naive understan...
متن کاملGalactic and Accretion Disk Dynamos
Dynamos in astrophysical disks are usually explained in terms of the standard alpha-omega mean field dynamo model where the local helicity generates a radial field component from an azimuthal field. The subsequent shearing of the radial field gives rise to exponentially growing dynamo modes. There are several problems with this model. The exponentiation time for the galactic dynamo is hard to c...
متن کاملLocalized magnetorotational instability and its role in the accretion disc dynamo
The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is believed to be an efficient way to transport angular momentum in accretion discs. It has also been suggested as a way to amplify magnetic fields in discs, the instability acting as a nonlinear dynamo. Recent numerical work has shown that a large-scale magnetic field, which is predominantly azimuthal, axisymmetric and has zero net flux, can be sustained...
متن کاملGalactic dynamos driven by magnetic buoyancy
We consider a mean field dynamo model for the generation of galactic magnetic fields, in which the driving mechanism for the alpha-effect is the buoyancy-driven Parker instability, rather than the conventional cyclonic turbulence. The dominant quenching mechanism is a buoyant velocity, which lifts field away from the disc plane. Our modified alpha-effect is essentially nonlinear, as its magnitu...
متن کاملThe effects of vertical outflows on disk dynamos
We consider the effect of vertical outflows on the mean-field dynamo in a thin disk. These outflows could be due to winds or magnetic buoyancy. We analyse both two-dimensional finite-difference numerical solutions of the axisymmetric dynamo equations and a free-decay mode expansion using the thin-disk approximation. Contrary to expectations, a vertical velocity can enhance dynamo action, provid...
